This abdominal wall defect is known as an omphalocele, because the defect involves the umbilical cord, as shown here. Abdominal contents can herniate into the omphalocele, and the fetal abdomen will not develop properly. An omphalocele is more indicative of a possible chromosomal abnormality than other abdominal wall defects.
