In this gravid uterus, the placenta implanted over the cervical os. This is called placenta previa. Implantation in this low lying position leads to a less functional placenta than one implanted in the fundus, and when labor starts, placenta previa can lead to extensive hemorrhage as the dilation of the cervix disrupts the placenta.
